Homecoming Talk

I had the opportunity to serve in two missions: the Oregon Eugene Mission and the Brazil Campinas Mission. The Oregon Eugene mission covers the area from Corvallis, Oregon down to the very northern part of California. The Brazil Campinas Mission covers the very northern part of the state of São Paulo to the very southern part of the neighboring state of Minas Gerais. When I arrived in Oregon, I was one of 35 missionaries who arrived just that day, and our mission had over 200 missionaries. This was in stark contrast to my arrival in Brazil when I flew from Eugene to Brazil completely by myself not being able to speak Portuguese. When I made it to the airport in São Paulo, I was greeted by a woman who told me in broken English to get in this black car that had just pulled up. She never told me who she was or where I was going. The driver spoke no English and I spoke no Portuguese, so we rode in silence for the next hour. It was the longest hour of my life, and the tho...

Week 76: My Last Email

Image
Bom diaaa pessoal!! This week was absolutely insane. Sister Cannon and I passed through five different cities and also are in a trio!! Never a dull moment here in the Missão Brasil Campinas! Yesterday at church I also spoke and became the primary pianist which was pretty fun.  Also as the subject suggests, this email is my last email I will write as a missionary!! These last 18 months have changed my life and I will forever be grateful for the things I learned and the people I have met. Oregon and Brazil will always have a special place in my heart. I will be speaking in church about my mission on December 12 and you are all welcome to come!!  See you all soon!! Thanks for the prayers and love these past 18 months. Com amor, Sister Johnson

Week 75: temple!!

Boa tarde gente!! This week we had zone conference at the Campinas temple! It was so good to go back after so much time. Also, Sister Cannon and I got a call from our mission president at 10pm on Friday night telling us we were going to move houses. So we are currently living outside of our two areas in another area, but we aren't working in the area we are living in. Totally wild but what's new??? This week is my last week as a missionary! Crazy how time flies! Love you all!! Com amor, Sister Johnson  Pictures from the temple!

Week 74: Batismo and companion #13

Image
Olá pessoal, tudo bem com vocês?? Highlight of the week was the baptism of Patrícia. She had been meeting with missionaries for almost a year and finally made the decision to be baptized. The baptism was even more special when her husband Julio was able to baptize her. He is a pretty recent convert himself, so this was a very special event for them and their whole family.  With all the new Americans coming to the mission we had a mini transfer. Sister Hinton left me which I am really sad about and I am now companions with Sister Cannon from Portland, Oregon! She has been here in Brazil for about four months and is amazing. We are pretty sure she is going to be my last companion but we already know that there is another transfer happening this coming week, so who knows what will happen!! We also went on exchanges and had MLC this week, so it has been a little chaotic around here. But we have seen so many miracles between having eight people at church and finally getting back in cont...

Week 73: Blessings on Blessings

Image
Bom dia gente!! This week was hands down one of my favorite weeks on the mission! I met so many amazing people, saw some beautiful places in our area, and even got to hear from another Apostle! A few weeks ago on exchanges Sister Hinton and another Sister from another area street contacted a few guys who were sitting outside their houses. We had tried a couple times to get back in contact with them, but it never worked out. We were out street contacting again during the week and we ran into them! We went up and started teaching them about the plan of salvation. In the middle of our lesson, another guy pulled up in his truck and started participating in the lesson with us as well! We talked with them for a while and had an awesome discussion, but after a while we told them that we had to leave. They were pretty sad about it and told us to come by any afternoon to talk to them because they would always be there! One of the men José said that when the Sisteres first talked w...

Week 72: God is in the details

Image
Bom dia!! One night after a lesson Sister Hinton and I were walking home and we had to make a little detour from the route we usually take. We were almost at our house when we heard someone behind us say, "are you Mormons??" We turned around and saw this guy sitting on his motorcycle and we started talking with him! He told us that he had just recently moved to Louveira from another state in Brasil where he had met with missionaries, and he didn't know there was a chapel here in Louveira until he saw and recognized our name tags. We were able to get his phone number and we invited him to come to church with us. If we hadn't taken that little detour, we probably never would have run into him! God is in the details! We decided this week to start looking through the physical area books that are in our apartment to try and find some new people to teach. We noticed that the paper area books hadn't been transferred over when the whole system went digital, so we figured ...

Week 71: Brazilian Disneyland

Oi bom dia galera, tudo bem? Another transfer gone! Crazy to think that I am going into my last transfer now! Time really flies. We got transfer news today and Sister Hinton and I will be staying together in Louveira which we are so excited about!! Our mission is in a constant state of transfer with all the new Americans who come into the mission every now and then. So we will see what happens!  Our friend Eddy was supposed to be baptized yesterday but he had a family emergency and drove 600 km away, so we are hoping he will be back here soon and we can remark his baptism! We also started teaching a new family this week. Neide and her three kids just recently lost their husband/father, and they are looking for a lot of answers. We were able to share scriptures from the Book of Mormon with them, and I was able to see the difference these verses made in their lives. The Book of Mormon truly has power! This week we got to go on splits with the Sisters in the neighboring city and we go...
